YOUR READING STAYS WITH YOU

Privacy policy

Last updated October 25, 2026 · David Mode browser extension, Safari companion app, and davidmode.com

David Mode replaces profanity with playful alternatives on the pages you visit. Filtering happens in your browser. The extension does not send page text, browsing history, or preferences to us or to a processing service.

Webpage text and current website

On permitted HTTP and HTTPS pages, David Mode reads accessible webpage text to identify and replace matching words. It keeps original text temporarily in the page’s memory so you can reveal it or restore it by turning filtering off. This text is not written to extension storage or transmitted by the extension. Temporary originals are released as the page or filtering instance is disposed of, such as when you leave or reload the page.

The popup reads the active tab’s URL to identify its hostname and show the “Filter this site” control. David Mode does not build a browsing-history log. Hostnames that you explicitly disable are saved locally as site preferences. Editable fields and code are excluded from filtering. Images, PDFs, canvas, frames, closed shadow roots, and browser-protected pages are outside the filter’s coverage.

Accessible page text can include personal communications or other sensitive information displayed on a website. David Mode handles that text only in the page to provide the filter; it does not extract it into a separate record or transmit it.

Preferences stored on your device

David Mode uses your browser’s local extension storage for preferences, including whether filtering and original-word reveals are enabled, filter strength, word collection, and disabled-site hostnames. These preferences remain until you change or remove them or uninstall the extension. The extension does not use browser sync storage or send preferences to us.

Why the extension requests permissions

Sharing, tracking, and remote code

The extension has no analytics, advertising, tracking scripts, accounts, or remote text-processing service. Its code and word collections are bundled with the extension. We do not receive, sell, share, or use your page text or local preferences for advertising, credit decisions, or unrelated purposes. Your browser and extension store may separately handle installation, updates, and store interactions under their own policies.

David Mode’s use of information received from browser APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Information is used only to provide the described filtering and preference controls. We do not transfer extension reading data to third parties or give humans access to it.

Your choices and deletion

Use the toolbar popup to change preferences, disable filtering on a site or everywhere, or control original-word reveals. Turning filtering off through the popup restores original words on active pages. If you disable the whole extension, revoke its permission, or uninstall it, reload affected pages to restore their original text. Uninstalling removes its local extension storage through the browser. We have no server-side copy of your page text or preferences to access or delete.

The Safari companion app

The companion app provides setup instructions and checks whether its Safari extension is enabled. Opening a test page, privacy policy, or support link makes an ordinary web request to that website. The app does not send webpage text or extension preferences to us.

The marketing website

The demo on davidmode.com keeps its example and control state in memory and does not save your text or preferences. Browser detection only chooses which installation instructions to show; it is not stored or sent by the site’s code. The website has no analytics scripts, tracking cookies, or remote fonts.

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, receives ordinary web requests when you visit the website or download an extension. These requests can include an IP address, request headers, the requested URL, and request time, which the provider may process for delivery, security, and operational logs under its own retention practices. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy. The website does not send extension reading data to the hosting provider.

Contact and changes

David Mode is maintained by Travis Baker. Send privacy and support questions to [email protected]. If you contact us, we receive the information you include in your message and use it to respond and resolve your request. Please do not include sensitive webpage text. This correspondence is handled by our email provider and is separate from the extension’s local processing.

We will update this page and its date when these practices change. This policy covers David Mode and its marketing website; David Reader is a separate extension.
